Yeah, be careful with that. The military is a sometimes necessary evil.

Soldiers are also the enforcement branch of the government. They can turn from saviors to oppressors in short order.

It is the soldier who can take away freedom of the press, freedom of speech, freedom to demonstrate, and trample your flag under his boots when ordered to do so.
Hence the "purges" of General officers & the policies implemented over the last two + years.

You know what, I'm not even going to wait for your reply. Have you even been accosted by a soldier in official capacity? I thought not. As I recall, violations of the "freedom of the press, freedom of speech, freedom to demonstrate" we hear about were (and continue to be) committed by CIVILIAN agencies (ATF, FBI, etc.). Ever heard of Posse Comitatus? Look it up.

And trample the flag? You can't be serious. The military is not perfect by any means -- it's run by imperfect people. But, at our roots we are AMERICANS (not the NFL, NBA, etc.) and it's OUR FLAG. You will never see a real soldier/sailor/marine/airman disrespect it in any way. Those who hold sentiment otherwise are the exception and, when the system works, they are separated like chaff. Again, imperfect, but at the core it is GOOD.

I won't spend another minute picking apart your misplaced argument. You feel how you feel. If you have served, I am sorry for whatever happened to you that made you perceive the Service the way you do. But, if you have not served, shut the fuck up and educate yourself.

Except when expressly authorized by law, and presently we are considered the threat to democracy, I wouldn’t put it past them.

Ludlow Massacre, Battle of Blair Mountain, Whiskey Rebellion, Shay's Rebellion, Battle of Anacostia Flats, Wounded Knee - our military has been used as a tool of domestic oppression a number of times before and someone in uniform was willing to do it. You're stuck on a normalcy bias that tells you that neither you nor anyone you know would take up arms against the American people but there will always be people who will follow orders, no matter how despicable, particularly if the victims are demonized as "traitors" first.

Churchill attacked the French fleet at Mers el Kebir, despite having Admiral Darlan's assurances that he'd never let the Germans take control of it, because he couldn't take the chance. The American people can't afford to assume that our military will side with us in large numbers either.

What makes you think today's military are less inclined to be tools of the state?

Because I've worked with thousands of them and, contrary to those uneducated in military generalities, the vast majority of us are good people who uphold the Constitution... we actually have families and normal lives we live among the citizenry.

We don't stay up late with nefarious thoughts of pushing agendas you see in the likely-too-many movies you watch. We also like to be left alone as much as the next guy. I'll ask you, too -- did you serve?

And, you didn't answer my "90+ years" question...
